She was climbing the northern side of Cathedral Peak with two friends about 12.30pm when she slipped and her protection gear loosened.
She landed on her back on a rock ledge.
Ambulance, SES and police attended but search and rescue units from Melbourne were needed and dropped by Air Wing about 5pm.
The woman, believed to be in her early 30s, was carried to the saddle between Cathedral Peak and Hump Peak.
She was then taken to the car park at the base of the mountain where she was transported to Wangaratta hospital by ambulance.
Her condition could not be confirmed last night and injuries were unknown.
