The rumour mill was in a flurry after the Australian actress was spotted carrying a baby in a sling earlier this week.
The adoption news has since been confirmed by Blanchett's publicist.
"The Upton family have adopted a baby girl. Her name is Edith Vivian Patricia Upton," publicist Lisa Kasteler told Fairfax Media on Saturday morning.
According to the Australian Women's Weekly, Blanchett was seen cuddling the baby to her chest outside her children's Sydney school.
"Cate has told friends at the local school that she and her husband, theatre producer Andrew Upton, are deliriously happy with the new addition to their family," the magazine reported.

The couple already have three boys - Dashiell, 13, Roman, 10 and Ignatius, six.
Blanchett, 45, and Upton, 49, who live in Hunters Hill, announced earlier this year that they would be leaving Sydney for the United States once Upton's term as artistic director at the Sydney Theatre Company ends.
