In a major shock, the classy import was declared a non-runner just after the final field was declared and barrier draw held at the Commercial Club yesterday morning.
Lidari was to be ridden by three-time Victorian premiership winning jockey Luke Nolen and carry topweight of 59 kilograms.
A tendon complaint forced Moody to withdraw the multiple group winner.
The Gai Waterhouse-trained Queenstown is the new topweight with 55.5 kilograms.
The remaining 14 runners get in on the minimum weight of 54 kilograms.
Despite taking some of the gloss off the final field, Albury Racing Club has attracted another quality field for Friday’s $170,000 feature.
Waterhouse will fly the flag for Sydney trainers but will face some tough competition from the Melbourne raiders including Robert Smerdon, David Brideoake and Michael Moroney.
There is also plenty of quality among the jockeys with Tim Clark, Sam Clipperton, Tye Angland, Brenton Avdulla, Kerrin McEvoy and Christain Reith set to ride.
Respected racing analyst, Chris Scholtz, racing editor of Racing and Sports, was full of praise for the field.
“Outside 2011 which remains the benchmark for this race, this is the equal of any field in recent cup history,” Scholtz said.
“There is plenty of depth in the field with group and listed winners.
“There is also plenty of quality jockeys making the trek considering the Sydney carnival is in full swing and Moonee Valley will also be racing Friday night.”
Local trainers are also well represented with the Brett Cavanough-trained Price Of Glory and last year’s runner-up the leading local hope.
Brian Cox (Bringenbrong and Murdoch’s Joy), Kerry Weir (Sand Dune and Go Get ‘Em) and Alex Aquilina (Olly I Am) will also have runners.
