Magistrate Tony Murray imposed a fixed term backdated to last year when sentencing Kyle Trent Cameron Meadway in Albury Local Court on dangerous driving and disqualified driving matters.
Meadway, 24, of Glenroy, had his driving ban extended by five years, starting at the end of his present disqualification on July 1, 2021.
He was driving a blue Commodore which was racing another car in Young Street at an estimated 120km/h as they went through a 40km/h zone outside The Scots School about 9.20am on September 18 last year.
Meadway’s car was boxed in by others at the Young Street and Borella Road intersection when the officer approached.
“Police, stop,” the officer said when he got to the driver’s door and tried to take hold of Meadway when reaching inside.
Meadway put his car in gear, accelerated harshly and his vehicle veered to the right into a Nissan XTrail, which later had to be towed away, in an adjacent lane.
The officer had his right knee jammed between the two vehicles.
Meadway moved his car forward and rammed into the back of another vehicle before escaping out the front passenger door just as the officer got the ignition keys and turned the engine off.
The officer suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage, needing surgery and six months rehabilitation.
When Meadway decided to escape, the officer tried to chase him, but the knee injury prevented him.
The incident was recorded on the police in-car video.
