Education spokesman Nick Wakeling made the call following a visit to the Appin Park Primary School.

The previous Coalition government promised $410,000 to Appin Park, but Labor has not committed to the project since taking office last year.

Mr Wakeling also visited Benalla’s P-12 College, which secured a Coalition promise of $15 million, and the Seymour P-12 College.

“This visit is focussing on schools where the Coalition had previously made funding commitments and the government has not made a commitment to any of those schools,” he said.

“The purpose of this visit is an opportunity to talk to local schools communities — the principals, the school council presidents and representatives — to understand the need.

“It’s also to really put pressure on Premier Andrews to make a funding commitment to deliver this important funding in the May state budget.”

Mr Wakeling said these were clearly good schools, “but we want to make them even better”.

“We know that great education is being delivered to Appin Park,” he said.

“But the amenities, particularly for the staff, are sub-standard.

“We’ve actually got staff who are having to sit on plastic chairs outside the building because they can’t be accommodated in the staff room.”

Mr Wakeling said that was clearly unacceptable to the community.

“We’re here to call on the premier to listen to the concerns of regional Victoria and ensure that a commitment will be made to these schools,” he said.

“If the Premier makes a decision to not provide the funding for rural schools such as Appin Park we will continue a very strong campaign on behalf of regional Victoria to ensure that vital funding is delivered for these communities in the future.”

Mr Wakeling said the government needed to ensure it was not “Melbourne-centric”.
