NO allocation has been made in Wodonga’s 2015-16 budget for artwork at urban square.
But that does not mean it is off-the-table, with staff still considering the expressions of interest from artists to create a public artwork valued up to $1 million to sit at the corner of Elgin Boulevard and High Street.
While there is no commitment over the next 12 months for public art funding, the budget does provide for $500,000 for the following two years.
That money will be used for artwork across the whole city.
Mayor Rodney Wangman said a piece would still to go into the square, but the council’s own bid for a “centrepiece” was still under discussion.
“We’ve moved beyond being a traditional rural shire — as a regional city there are expectations of providing lifestyle, of art and culture,” he said.
“The best cities in the world have great art, why should Wodonga be any different.”
