Albury’s move comes as the corporation adopts a decentralisation program to shift about 300 jobs out of Canberra and into regional centres.
The annual economic benefit of the jobs that may come to Albury has been put at more than $10 million a year.
Yet anyone living in this region would understand that Albury would not be the only place to benefit with such a bumper inflow of people.
The newcomers are sure to spread out across the region, including Wodonga, when the chose where they will live.
And of course, the wider region further benefits from those who spend their money on other goods and services once they settle here.
There have been many past instances in which Albury and Wodonga have competed for jobs and or infrastructure and that often has been to the detriment of one or the other.
The fact that is not happening this time indicates better understanding between our city leaders and the prospect of longer-term commitment the can work together for the good of the region.
