Cr Cameron’s motion to approach the NSW government about cameras on pedestrian bridges across the Hume Highway was passed 7-1.
Cr Daryl Betteridge and Cr David Thurley challenged Cr Cameron on what they thought was his assumption CCTV cameras would definitely be installed in Dean Street. Cr Betteridge called a point of order on Cr Cameron.
The issue will return to the council shortly.
Cr Cameron was forced to clarify his comments.
“I am very hopeful in this term of the council and this budget we will be putting CCTV in Dean Street,” he said.
“As we are on the cusp of putting CCTV in Dean Street it would be an ideal time to contact the roads minister and the local member about seeing if we can come to some arrangement about the possibility of also putting CCTV on pedestrian bridges which we must remember are state government assets.”
Albury MP Greg Aplin said he had a meeting with one of roads minister Duncan Gay’s advisors scheduled this week and criticised Cr Cameron, a Labor Party member, for “playing politics”.
“Had he been serious he would have contacted me to discuss the issue itself,” Mr Aplin said.
