Tyrell suffered the injury against Tumbarumba in round 2 but only found out last week that he needs to have his knee reconstructed.
The Swans captain suffered a similar fate two years ago — on his other knee.
Federal coach Jack Neil said the loss of Tyrell was a huge blow to the Swans’ hopes after such a powerful start to season.
They now sit on top of the ladder with a 6-1 record.
“It’s a huge loss because he always plays on the opposition best forward and rarely gets beaten,” Neil said.
“Hayden is also an exceptional leader and has been captain this year.
“It’s obviously a pretty sad story for him, doing his knee twice in three seasons.”
Federal will hosts Tumbarumba on Saturday.
There was little between the teams in their first clash of the season and Neil said he expected this one to be tight, too.
In other matches, Bullioh should bounce back to winning form against Corryong.
And Cudgewa will have too much class for a struggling Border-Walwa.
