The first trucks to empty green bins will hit the streets early on Monday.

Indigo mayor Bernard Gaffney yesterday said he expected the start of the three-bin system would go off without a hitch.

The Albury Council has had a three-bin system for a couple of months.

Cr Gaffney said the figures made the benefits clear of taking organic waste out of bins.

“Up to 45 per cent — a regional average — of what goes into bins is organic,” he said.

“What now ends in landfill can be diverted through this system.

“It’s good for the planet, good for the environment and good for Indigo.”

As in Albury, green-lid bins will be collected weekly, while red-lid general waste and yellow-lid recycling bins will be collected on alternate weeks.

Transpacific Cleanaway’s Nina McHardy said the bin roll-out was being done over two weeks.

“We’ll have that completed on Saturday, ready for first collection on next Monday,” she said.

“We’re really happy with how the roll-out has gone.”

Cr Gaffney said a few people were concerned about the new service and what it meant for them.

He said he had discussed Albury’s experience of its roll-out with the city’s mayor Cr Kevin Mack.

“In Albury, there was some early resistance to the change, but it now seems to be well-accepted,” he said.

“We’re hoping for the same here and I can’t see why it wouldn’t be.”

Cr Gaffney said the council was “very confident” the system would start on time.

“The bins have been distributed so we’re all set to go,” he said.

“There’s a phone number for hard waste — 13 1339 — and the council would be pleased if inquiries were made to that number.”

Cr Gaffney said talking to Cr Mack had given him “a great deal of confidence” the system would be accepted by the shire’s residents.

Ms McHardy said Transpacific Cleanaway had done a “really comprehensive” community- engagement program.

“We’ve been out in the community delivering more than 50 sessions to groups and the wider public,” she said.
