The doctor said he would be interested in running, but “that’s a matter for the party”, which is in the process of developing its pre-selection procedure.
Dr Fidge ran for the fledgling party — a merger of the Country Alliance and Bob Katter’s Australia Party in Victoria — in Ovens Valley in last year’s Victorian election, earning 9.4 per cent of the primary vote.
“I am concerned about becoming a perennial candidate, I don’t want to do that, and I’m quite happy to make way for new candidates,” he said.
“But the thing about being a member of a party is subjugating your own desires and wishes for the greater good, and I’d do what I can to help the party achieve representation.”
Should he run, he would do so opposite former Liberal MP Sophie Mirabella, who notably congratulated Dr Fidge on winning a spot on Wangaratta Council in 2012.
Dr Fidge has also been named chairman of ACA’s policy advisory committee, which will involve directing the party’s platform.
ACA describes itself as a rural and regional voice that’s an alternative to the Nationals.
Dr Fidge said there were more than 700 registered members so far.
