That came soon after the body of his snowboarding companion and mate Daniel Kerr was found.
The two Melbourne men were experienced and well prepared for the conditions, but not even that could save them from an avalanche near their campsite at Michell’s Hut, above Eskdale Spur.
Yesterday, Mr Buckland’s widow and young son visited the area to pay tribute to the loss of a treasured husband and father.
But through her grief Sally Buckland still wanted to impart a message to others who visit our alpine areas over the winter months.
And that is, make sure you know everything possible about snow safety.
It is clear to see why being as prepared as possible. That includes making sure others know of your plans before setting off on an alpine adventure.
Mrs Buckland’s message is especially pertinent, given the forecast for coming days of what could be south-east Australia’s coldest spell in a couple of years.
Snow is tipped to fall as low as 700 metres, so nobody should take any chances given the possible consequences.
