RAIN, hail, snow and ice on the road — the Border copped it all on Saturday.
HAIL AND ROAD ACCIDENTS
There were no serious car accidents but at least six cars slid off Border roads.
One woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries after the vehicle she was driving slid off the road and into an embankment near Beechworth about 5pm.
Meanwhile, five more cars slid off the road between Springhurst and Barnawartha between 4pm and 6pm.
The drivers of those cars were shaken but not injured.
Chiltern Leading Senior-Constable Dave Richards had a busy afternoon helping two drivers push their bogged vehicle out of mud.
“Luckily we had no car crashes, we were just getting reports of vehicles sliding off the road with all the ice about,” he said.
BURRUMBUTTOCK 'MINI-TORNADO'
SES crews were called out to Burrumbuttock about 3pm after gale-force winds stripped trees bare and lifted roofs off homes.
The storm left a trail of damage, keeping crews busy throughout the afternoon.
RAIN
Albury-Wodonga got off relatively easy with just 5.4 millimetres of rain recorded for the 24 hours up until 9am on Sunday.
Rutherglen recorded one of the heaviest rainfalls with 15.4 millimetres.
But it was the hail and wind chill factor that had residents complaining.
Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Phil King described the system as a severe winter cold outbreak that brought snow to the region and welcome rain.
He said the system brought a line of storms from NSW to Victoria and with that temperatures dropped quickly in the late afternoon from 12 degrees to just 7 degrees.
“We are likely to see snow continue until the weekend. This system will go away for a while and another one will move through on Wednesday,” he said.
SNOW
Meanwhile, another 13 centimetres of snow has fallen at Falls Creek throughout the weekend, with 20 to 30 centimetres expected in coming days.
It brings the snow total to 34 centimetres since Friday.
Falls Creek is still on track to receive 120 centimetres by next weekend, with another cold system expected to hit on Wednesday.
The large dumping has seen Scott and Ruined Castle Chairlifts open in Sun Valley.
Anthony O’Shea, of Falls Creek Ski Lifts, said there was a lot of snow expected over the next few days, with more than half-a-metre in the forecast for the weekend, and even more expected by the middle of the week.
“Falls Creek is expected to receive more fresh snow over the next seven days than anywhere else in the world,” he said.
“We haven’t seen a storm forecast as good as this in early July for a long time.”
