Club starts FootGolf

But don’t be confused by the lack of nets and the golf greens, with a flag in the oversized holes.

This is the new world of FootGolf at Boorhaman Golf Course, reputedly the first in regional Australia to introduce the sport.

Course handicapper Helen Southam said the club decided to give the sport a go after they saw a segment about it on morning television.

A couple of club members then went down to a Melbourne golf course to find out what the sport was all about.

“They came back and said this might be a really good thing for our community,” she said.

“Our little golf club is getting smaller and smaller, like at most golf clubs.

“We just didn’t want to lose the facilities because we’ve got a community hall, tennis courts and the golf course too of course.”

A soccer club is already booked in to give the sport a go on Saturday, with the first official event at the nine-hole course a come and try day on August 1.

The course — complete with tees and specially designed greens — has been created over half a dozen regular holes.

Anyone who lands their ball onto one of the sandscrape greens has to resist the urge to kick again. Instead, they have to take a drop back onto the grass.

“It really is a lot of fun,” Mrs Southam said.

“It’s scored the same as golf, with pars 3, 4 and 5, and the other rules are pretty much the same.”

Mrs Southam said the sport was especially good for companies that might want to have a great day out for their workers.

The club recently had a senior official from the FootGolf Australia pay a visit.

“He says it’s a world-wide sport, it’s huge,” she said.

“That’s especially in places like Brazil, England and the US and they also have international competitions.

“For people in their 20s, 30s and 40s, I think it’s absolutely fantastic, as well as for kids.”

Up to 36 players in teams of four can be on the course.
