The man rolled his white Ford Falcon about 4.20pm in Chiltern on Thursday, taking out three small trees before hitting a large tree.
The point of impact was about a metre in front of the driver's door, and Sergeant Mick Savage said the man had been incredibly lucky.
"We're not sure how or why the car has crashed at this stage," he said.
"We had someone turn up shortly after the incident but we haven't had anyone come forward who saw the whole thing."
The car appeared to travel in a straight line before leaving the road, and travelled about 60 metres before hitting the tree.
The driver was trapped in the car and had to cut out by SES members.
