Matthews, 31, of Adams Street, has been in custody since being arrested on May 10, but made no application for release until yesterday.
The court was told in tendered police facts that a man wearing a bandana went into the Globe Hotel bottle shop about 7.10pm on August 10, 2013.
He was holding a knife in his right hand and a bag in his left hand.
Money was demanded from the bottle shop attendant, 24, who thought it was Matthews because of his distinctive voice.
After Matthews fled, the attendant pushed a security alarm and police arrived. Within minutes an audit revealed $1405 in cash and 12 packets of cigarettes had been stolen.
Police went to Matthews’ home and did a cursory search but a further search was declined.
Police were granted a phone intercept warrant in April last year and released images to the media.
In a phone call from his brother on April 15, it was suggested to Matthews that there was a good photograph of him to which Matthews replied: “Yeah, but they can’t see me though”.
Officers executed a search warrant at the house where Matthews was living on April 17 this year.
Matthews was arrested on another matter on May 10 and subsequently charged with the robbery.
Magistrate Tony Murray was told it was unlikely Matthews would get a trial date in Albury before May next year, but refused bail.
