That’s the message behind a community day on Saturday being organised by members of the Islamic Society of Albury-Wodonga.

President Yakub Mohammed said non-Muslims were invited to visit Lavington’s Mirambeena Community Centre between 10am and 5pm, where stalls and food would be available.

Last Saturday the Border’s Muslims celebrated Eid with their families, but the community day is a chance for those outside the religion to learn more.

"About what is Islam,” Mr Mohammed said.

“There's a lot of myths out there.

"I've said this over and over to the media, hundreds of times, that Islam is the religion of extreme peace.

"In Islam, it says clearly in the Koran that if you kill one person, it's like you killed the whole of humanity."

Mr Mohammed said some people overseas manipulated Islamic teachings about self-defence, but Border residents should not think this applied to local Muslims.

"Just because what you see on television … you can't tarnish the rest of us," he said.

"I was born here; if I was a terrorist ... don't you think Albury-Wodonga probably wouldn't exist by now?

“Because you tarnish all the religion, you're tarnishing me as well.”

Food is likely to play a big part in Saturday’s community day, but visitors may be surprised by the range available.

"In Islam, you know, it is very multicultural, very diverse,” Mr Mohammed said.

“Every single country in the world has Muslims, (so) there's no particular favourite dish, but every culture has their own favourite."

Mr Mohammed, whose family comes from Fiji, cited the example of a recent meal with Muslim friends that also included food with Malaysian, Lebanese and Pakistani origins.

The community event comes soon after Ramadan, a period of prayer and fasting for Muslims that ends with the festival of Eid.

“They've been sacrificing so much during the month of Ramadan from sunrise to sunset, no eating, no drinking, absolutely nothing go in you," Mr Mohammed said.

"When Eid comes, it's just a big celebration day that the month has passed."
