Police stopped the 29-year-old man’s speeding car in Wangaratta on Sunday night and located 70 cartons of cigarettes and $12,000 cash.
The man had been in the country since April last year and had overstayed a tourist visa.
To support himself, the man had been illegally importing cigarettes and selling them from his car in the North East.
He had also set up a website for people to contact him to buy them.
The man had been travelling at 122km/h on the Hume Highway when he was stopped about 8.25pm, and a search of the car discovered the cash and cigarettes.
The man will be charged with possessing the proceeds of crime and traffic offences, and may be charged with smuggling-related offences.
Two women in the car were released pending enquiries.
The man is considered an unlawful non-citizen and will be transported to an immigration detention centre, and is likely to be deported in the next fortnight.
