Where to go this weekend, that is the question?
Things haven’t changed much in Lake Hume over the past week or so – hell, they haven’t changed for the past month or two.
The occasional good reddie, nice yella and big trout are still coming in.
The fish being caught are quality, but they’re only being caught occasionally.
Flatline trolling trout on Tassies and minnow style lures such as Rapalas or Nilmasters still seems most productive, although reports of people using leadline successfully have come through.
It’s the same at Jindabyne or Eucumbene – we’ve had some reasonable reports from both, with quality fish showing up.
An 11-pounder came out of Jindabyne a week or so ago, while you’ve also got a chance of catching a monster salmon as they released some huge old brood stock up to 20lb in the past month or two – one of those would keep you occupied for a while if you hooked it.
Both lakes are widely recognised as having the best eating trout in Australia, so if it’s not cold enough here, why not head to the high country and give em a crack?
Khancoban has been fishing pretty well, depending on who you talk to.
We’ve had a couple of our Compleat Angler customers report great fishing and beautiful fish in the past week or two, using much the same techniques as for Hume etc, but as usual, there’s always one or two missing out.
It seems lots of trout have finished “doing the job” up the streams, have fallen back into the lake and are feeding pretty well.
A lot of fishos believe working your rod while trolling increases your catch rate, no matter where you fish, and it has been proven over many years in Khancoban.
I’m not sure what it is, but that erratic action seems to turn them on in this place more than any other.
It can be hard work but it’s worth a try – rip your rod forward with a couple of quick jerks then let it fall back. Give it a second or two and repeat. Apart from hooking more fish you get to feel the strike, which is a huge buzz.
If you haven’t done it before, you’ll find the fish almost always hit while the lure is sitting still, on the drop back, and as you go to give it another rip you’re on.
Mulwala was filling this week and will be worth a crack in coming weeks.
There are still some nice yellas and the odd big cod at Blowering and Burrinjuck, with a mix of bait and lures.
The crays are still firing, and things should settle as the river level falls.
There’s only a few weekends left, so get out and have a go. See ya.
