The 18-month-old from Oxley underwent the five-hour procedure on Thursday to try to cure an immunodeficiency disorder.

Now he is in isolation at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital awaiting daily test results that will tell whether his blood cell counts start to go up.

“That will indicate whether the new cells that have been donated have been grafted, but that will take two to three weeks to occur,” his father, Tony Ciavarella, told The Border Mail.

It meant he basically had no immune system, which meant doctors had to keep a close watch on him to ensure there were no infections.

“Everything is going well and the doctors are happy with Charlie’s progress,” Mr Ciavarella said.
