Best-case scenario would probably be three or four weeks.
- Brandon Symes
The former VFL ruckman landed awkwardly on his troublesome ankle in Saturday’s loss to North Albury at the J.C. Lowe Oval, playing no further part in the game after the second quarter incident.
Symes is on crutches and will get a clearer diagnosis when he visits the specialist, but with just two home-and-away games left before finals, his season could be over.
“It’s looking a bit that way,” the 24-year-old said.
“Best-case scenario would probably be three or four weeks. I’m seeing the doctor today and getting an X-ray and ultrasound.
“I dare say it will just be ligaments.
“I’ve done the same one a few times now.
“This will be the third time this year.”
Symes is crucial to Yarrawonga’s set up, and his absence will place more pressure on youngster Riley Welsh, who’s senior career consists of 14 games.
Premiership ruckman Steve McKee has played just one reserves match in 2015.
“I’ve heard stories that he could be (coming back),” Symes said of McKee.
“I suppose now he might be more of a chance.”
Matt Dwyer will also miss this week’s grand final re-match with Albury.
Dwyer limped off the ground in the first quarter against North Albury with a calf injury.
But the Pigeons could pull a surprise and name co-coach Brendan Fevola.
The star spearhead was seen running and kicking before the game with the Hoppers last week, and is close to returning from a broken ankle.
The Pigeons are hoping to get at least one game into Fevola before the finals.
So if he doesn’t play against Albury, he could return for the round 18 game against the Wodonga Raiders at the J.C. Lowe Oval.
“We were always planning on at least that last game of the regular season,” co-coach Drew Barnes said.
“He’s very important to our side – he’s a match-winner.”
Albury could also make a couple of changes after its 21-match winning streak was snapped by Lavington.
Luke Packer and Michael Thompson didn’t play, while key defender Jay Koehler suffered a leg injury against the Panthers.
With two rounds remaining before finals, it’s unlikely the top five ladder positions will change.
The Tigers would have to lose to Yarrawonga and the Rovers to lose top spot.
Lavington is two wins clear of the Raiders in second, while North Albury could take third if the Raiders stumble.
