But it was his use of methamphetamine that tipped off police that something wasn’t right.
They were doing a walk-through at Albury’s Astor Hotel on November 26 last year when they saw Matthews and another man playing the pokies.
Matthews, who was already known to police, was clearing “fidgeting” and was aggravated when spoken to by police, Albury Local Court heard on Monday.
Matthews’ pupils were like pinpricks.
Police searched Matthews and found $450 in $50 notes in his wallet and two mobile phones.
The Springdale Heights man, 24, of Cardo Drive, could not say where he got the cash.
Police told him in late March that a phone examination report revealed messages dealing with drug supply.
He admitted he was a heavy user in 2012, but only used the drug recreationally about the time he was dealing.
Matthews pleaded guilty to four counts of supplying prohibited drugs on an ongoing basis, to a regular customer base of five between July and 26 and November 26 last year.
His monthly profit was about $300.
He will be sentenced on the charges, plus a fifth of dealing with property suspected to be the proceeds of crime, in the District Court in Albury.
