McNay was recognised for best feature story (daily and state-based papers) at the prestigious Rural Press Club of Victoria’s Journalism and Photography Awards in Melbourne on Friday night.
The piece focused partly on the issue of mental health.
Border Mail deputy editor Julie Coe said McNay was a deserving winner.
“Nigel’s piece, Finding a way to still waters, was the most difficult kind of writing a reporter could be asked to do, because it was so deeply personal,” she said.
“He has long been respected as one of this newspaper’s finest writers but it is fair to say that with this story, the admiration of him went to another level.
“There are not many people who would be comfortable with putting themselves out there, as Nigel did, and doing so with such a beautifully written story. It was a courageous piece of writing.”
