The Geographical Names Board has issued a call for public comment on a proposal to name the reserve, Nasho Gardens.

GNB chairman Des Mooney said community feedback was a mandatory part of any naming proposal.

“It is important that place names reflect the character and history of the local area and community,” he said.

“We want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposed name.”

The reserve is home to a memorial commemorating Australia’s national servicemen.

The memorial is dedicated to all Australian national servicemen and is in memory of those who died.

More than 287,000 young men served in the navy, army, and air force between 1951 and 1972.

Each year in February on National Servicemen’s Day, the association conducts a memorial service in the reserve to remember all national servicemen.

The memorial was unveiled in 2010 three years after the Harold Mair Bridge was opened as part the Albury-Wodonga internal freeway construction.

Australian National Servicemen Albury-Wodonga sub branch president Niel Russell said he hoped there would be no objections.

"About 18 months ago we thought with the park not being named we thought we might try and change that," he said.

"We applied for National Servicemen Gardens, but we were told it was too long and we shortened it to Nashos.

"It is a place I hope where people can go and reflect."

The naming Nashos Gardens was contingent on Albury Council approval.

The memorial has 21 small plaques on the back dedicated to former sub branch members who have died.

Several Nashos from the Border killed in the Vietnam War are also listed on the district's Vietnam War Memorial at the SS&A Club.

"It is a memorial to all national servicemen and not just our sub branch," Mr Russell said.

“We don't have national service anymore.

"Unless we have something like this we have nothing to remisce and think about.

"Our motto on the bottom of our letterhead is service to the nation.

"These people served even though they didn't go overseas."

The sub branch present membership is 110.

Mr Russell said he hoped the proposed Nashos Garden could expand further to the east towards the freeway.

Written submissions on the naming proposal can be lodged with the Geographical Names Board secretary.

The closing date for submissions is September 21.
