The midfielder was delisted by Brisbane after playing 13 games in two years with the Lions, but will nominate himself for the AFL Pre-Season and Rookie Draft on November 27.
“The dream isn't over, I still think I've got plenty to offer at AFL level,” O’Brien said.
“I've had a little bit of interest from a few clubs, so hopefully someone will give me an opportunity.
“I want to be drafted again, I'm not ready to give up on playing AFL just yet.
“I think I still have plenty to offer at the highest level.
“I’ve spent two years in the AFL system, I think I'll be a little bit more advanced than some of the younger guys coming through.”
Regardless of what happens, O'Brien ruled out a return to the Ovens and Murray if things didn't go his way at the draft, preferring a state league comeback.
After a somewhat tumultuous year with Brisbane, O'Brien said he'd learned a number of lessons about life at the highest level of football.
“I think the biggest thing was learning not to take it too seriously,” he said.
“You still have to be able to have fun and enjoy playing to be able to play to your best.
“Early on it was a very steep learning curve.
“You get to know your body very well, know your strengths and weaknesses.
“Ultimately I think I played well at AFL level and I was consistent in the NEAFL, I haven't missed a game and I haven't been injured.
“Hopefully I get another shot at it.”
