Lional and Dulcie Higginson’s long history in the High Street business saw them establish strong connections to their customers, and their community.
Five years ago, Dulcie's daughter Michelle Williams and husband Phil committed to continuing long tradition, taking over the business.
Apart from moving wtih the times in upgrading stock and purchasing systems, Mrs Matthews said the store had the same feel as it did in 1958.
“We've kept everything pretty much the same,” she said. “It's part of the character of the store.”
Mrs Matthews said the legacy of Lionel and Dulcie was one of true community spirit.
“My impression of the legacy that mum and dad have left the town and us is the support of every demographic that comes in,” she said.
“Their legacy is their support for the community and the loyalty of their customers.”
Mr Matthews said when they took over they had grand ideas but could not find a way to change what had been so successful.
“At this stage we've resisted changing anything very much,” he said.
“It's one of those homely feels like a shop in a small country town that also hasn't changed.”
The duo are also conscious of maintaining a relationship with the community.
“This is what we work very hard at trying to do and Michelle and I want to keep it strong,” Mr Matthews said.
Mrs Matthews said support came from well outside of the region.
“We have people come back year after year from Melbourne,” she said.
And while the next generation is now in charge, Dulcie continues to be a part of the shop she founded.
“Dulcie still comes in and even at 90 she runs her eye over things and checks stuff,” he said.
“She's still very switched on,” Mrs Matthews said.
Mr Matthews said what had been created before he and Michelle took over could not be forgotten.
“Everything that is here today is because of them,” he said.
