Ned’s great-grandniece Joanne Griffiths said her side of the family had not been informed about recent decisions to do with the bushranger’s remains so they wanted to make a stand around the future of the gaol.
The plan was to turn the old prison into an interpretive centre to protect the history of Ned Kelly.
“What better place to tell that story than within the walls of an historic institution that played such a prominent role in their lives and the legacy of the Kelly outbreak?” Ms Griffiths said.
“For 135 years, generations of our family have watched the history of our ancestors told by others.
“Now, as the family of Edward ‘Ned’ Kelly, we have decided to help build a better understanding about the Kelly story.”
She will be at Friday’s auction hoping the gaol will be bought by the family or a public entity, not overseas investors.
An online campaign has been set up to buy the Beechworth gaol at ozcrowd.com/campaigns/ned.
