The days are starting to get longer and we finally get to shake off that winter chill.
As spring and summer hits we start to think about how we can use these extra day light hours to our advantage. Have you considered increasing your physical activity?
Joining a sports club or group can be a great way to get the most out of your day, meet new people, find a new hobby and keep fit and healthy in the process.
Living in Albury/Wodonga we are lucky to have access to a diverse range of sports and activities that rival some of the bigger cities. There are many team sports to choose from including cricket, softball, tennis, dragon boat racing or water polo to name a few.
If team sport isn’t your thing then there are individually based sporting clubs such as athletics, sailing, bike riding or triathlon. Most clubs and teams are very welcoming of new participants no matter what their skill level.
However, joining a new club can be daunting and people often ask themselves whether they can do it or wonder what others will think of them. Try not to let these uncertainties turn you off.
A few seasons ago I decided to try my first triathlon. Sure at the time I didn’t own a bike and couldn’t swim 50 meters. But with the help of others I was able to get a second hand bike and I started a swimming program. I set a goal to complete the women’s triathlon held each year by the Albury/Wodonga Triathlon Club.
I remember being so nervous I could hardly get my shoes on after the swim. But no one laughed but were instead cheering me on and providing words of encouragement. It didn’t matter how fast I was going or how I looked doing it.
So if you are thinking about joining a club or team my advice is to have a go. There are people out there who will be welcoming and are happy to help you along the way.
If you are considering becoming more active but don’t want the costs involved in joining a gym or club there are many free activities held each week around the border.
For example, Parkrun is a five kilometre run/walk held weekly at Nouriel Park. It is timed, so if you’re looking for a challenge you can try to beat your personal best.
If running or walking doesn’t interest you, many of the local bike shops offer weekly group rides that can teach skills and safety tips for building confidence with your riding.
Both Albury and Wodonga councils also hold various activities throughout the summer months. This can be a great way to help you stay motivated. Having a set time and place stops you from putting it off.
Always remember to start slow when taking on a new activity. Talk to your physiotherapist about what options are best for you.
