The party wants the Australian Electoral Commission to put the former Holbrook Shire section of Greater Hume into Riverina with the rest to stay in Farrer.
"Although Holbrook’s links are most obviously with Albury, historical precedent and geography suggest that its interests will not be compromised too greatly in the Division of Riverina with Wagga Wagga," the Nationals told the commission in response to a NSW federal redistribution.
The commission unveiled new maps of electorates in October with Farrer losing Broken Hill and gaining the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area and it was also proposed to include Forbes and Parkes into Riverina.
The Nationals NSW state director Nathan Quigley said his organisation believed the Central West towns should remain outside Riverina and including the old Holbrook area was part of a plan to bolster the Wagga seat.
It was also suggested the Lockhart, Leeton and Narrandera shires be switched from Farrer to Riverina.
Greater Hume mayor Heather Wilton does not believe it would assist her council to straddle electorates.
"I am not so sure that's a good idea, I think they would prefer to be in Farrer where they have always been," Cr Wilton said.
"I think that's just going to be more difficult for everybody really.
"On the one hand they're trying to get rid of councils so MPs don't have to deal with so many, but we would end up with two federal MPs."
The commission is expected to have hearings on the redistribution this month with the final boundaries likely to be set in the new year.
