In July this year my husband and I relocated to the USA. We are here for two and a half years for my husband’s work.

During this time we are taking every opportunity to see as much of this amazing country as we can. So regular weekends and the occasional long weekend have turned into car, plane and train rides followed by walking, climbing stairs, hotel beds and different pillows.
It has made me reflect on what we put our bodies through when we travel.
Although we all need a relaxing holiday from time to time most of us plan trips in order to get the most out of our days off. It’s important to consider your readiness to tackle the challenges your trip will present.
Recently, we were fortunate enough to spend some time in the nation’s capital, Washington D.C. We did not have our car, instead we used the subway and walked for the majority of the time. On some days I would walk close to 10 kilometres. Each night I was exhausted and had sore feet. I quickly realised preparation is key.
Having good supportive footwear is a must. Pack appropriate clothing for the weather; layering clothes is good for the cold as it’s always warm inside buildings. Try to avoid over packing as this will make your suitcase heavy and decreases room for the goodies you buy.
It is also important to prepare for your trip’s physical demands. Prior to leaving decide on your plans and what these demands will be. Consider slowly starting a regular walking program in preparation. Many popular tourist destinations are old historical sites. Places such as Rome, Angkor Wat or Machu Picchu have access that can be limited to uneven paths or lots of steps. It is important to be ready for this too.
People often say it’s not the destination it’s the journey. However; the journey can often mean you’re stuck in a car or plane seat. This can often lead to stiffness or soreness. Ensure you stop or get out of your seat to have a stretch and change your body’s position. This way you won’t be limited when you reach your destination.
