The $2.65 million boost was the largest of the five projects in Indi which were successful in the second round of the National Stronger Regions funding round.
Towong mayor David Wortmann said the federal funding would complement the $2.52 million the council had committed.
The $5.3 million investment is aimed at creating 51 new jobs in Tallangatta, which celebrates the 60th anniversary of its relocation next year.
It also hoped the town's population will have increased by 20 per cent in the next decade.
"It is the biggest project Towong has ever taken on," Cr Wortmann said.
"We listened to the community and the community is right on board.
"They let us know what was required and then it was our job to get the project up and going.
"The whole point of Destination Tallangatta is we want people to live there and we want people to visit.
"But most importantly it is going to promote existing businesses and new businesses.
"With that comes jobs."
As part of the staged project the town's centre will get a facelift with pedestrian and cycle links and landscaping works.
An upgrade of the Tallangatta holiday park to capitalise on its proximity to Lake Hume is also a significant part of the project.
An adventure playground and outdoor amphitheatre are planned for the lake foreshore in consultation with Goulburn-Murray Water.
