Speaking ahead of the their Country Week C2 semi-final appearance at Wodonga, team captain Jim Lannan said the Wombats – and their mascot Earl – had been a permanent fixture at the annual tennis tournament for the past eight years.
“We’ve been coming for the last 12 years but we’ve only been the Wombats for the past eight,” Lannan said.
“Wodonga and the Wombats just go together, don’t you think?
“We reckon we’re the oldest team in the competition.
“We put that challenge out there and we don’t think anyone can beat us … for age.”
Henry Parker is the team’s most experienced campaigner at 77.
The tournament, which concludes with the finals on Friday morning, moves to Yarrawonga next year as part of the rotation between Wodonga, Shepparton and Swan Hill.
