Indigo Council showed its appreciation of hundreds of district volunteers at the gathering held at Chiltern.
The council’s health and wellbeing manager, Sally McCarron, said volunteers were the lifeline of small communities.
“They are vital,” she said.
“Without these people we wouldn’t have community transport and our aged services and football clubs would be lost.
“And the volunteers absolutely love it.
“They help because they want to — we wouldn’t get the same passion and values if they were paid to do it.
“It’s their way of putting something back into the community.”
Ms McCarron said it was the third thank-you afternoon tea the shire had held, with tai chi featured for something different.
Indigo Mayor Peter Graham spoke at the event before the volunteers shared food and drinks and gave tai chi their best shot.
