The 11.12 (78) to 8.10 (58) loss was soured for the Bulldogs with assistant coach Brett Doswell leaving the field in the third term with concussion.
The silky Doswell had 25 touches before being crunched in a heavy tackle and was missed by the Bulldogs, who paid a heavy price for sloppy ball use.
Defenders Michael Clark and Coen Hennessy were superb for the Hawks while Wodonga big man Matt Seiter pushed for best-on-ground honours with 12 marks and 26 possessions.
