The orchestra, which ranges in number from about 17 to 34, releases its second album Sierra Kilo Alpha on April 22 and the national tour to promote it brings the band to Albury for the first time.
"We think we developed a more international sound with this second album and we just want to play it to as many people as possible and have lots of fun,” orchestra leader Nicky Bomba says.
"Our live shows are lots of fun and pretty exciting, very interactive with the audiences.
"We love the live medium, connecting with people. We create mayhem. Everybody walks away smiling."
Bomba has been a driving force in the Australian music industry for more than 20 years.
His catalogue of excellent productions keeps him in high demand both in the studio and on the live scene.
He has also written and performed as the drummer on three successful John Butler Trio albums.
The Melbourne-based performer enjoys his work with the orchestra, which will see about 20 performers on stage at Albury’s SS&A Club on May 21.
"It's amazing, you wouldn't think a band like this would have any kind of traction but we get played on Triple J, we're doing Splendour In The Grass we're going to the Edinburgh Festival, it's an incredible thing," Bomba says.
“With this tour wer're playing more regional dates, that's why we're able to do Albury.
'I don't live very far from Albury and it's great that we're kind of in the neighbourhood.
Ska had its origins in 1950s and 60s Jamaica.
The Melbourne Ska Orchestra boasts a diverse international flavour with a focus on fun.
"People think orchestra and they think classical and strings and everybody sitting down and looking at a conductor and reading music,” Bomba says.
"We're probably the other end of that. We’re just as many people but the last thing we do is sit down … it is very active, energetic.”
And Sierra Kilo Alpha captures that excitement. The album sleeve and notes are printed in 3D and come with a pair of 3D glasses.
