The Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry is in need of people aged between 18 and 45 or those with ethnically diverse backgrounds.
Red Cross Blood Service spokeswoman Jemma Salkenmire said you might be that one person who is needed.
“You do have to give blood to join the registry and fill out a form while you are there,” she said.
“From there, someone will get in touch if you are a match.
“Diversity is important for finding matches for people with different backgrounds.”
About 70 per cent of people needing bone marrow will not find a match within their family.
Miss Salkenmire said there were two donation methods.
In some cases, it was similar to donating plasma, where a machine filters out stem cells and in others the marrow is extracted from the bone.
