One goal down to a Corowa-Rutherglen outfit, much better than their one-goal record, desperate for a win, the Rovers found their momentum in the third quarter to head into the last 36-32.
The Rovers slowed the game down to their speed, instead of being lured into a fast-paced high-error style, and benefited from some accurate shooting to get the win 50-39.
Rovers coach Michelle Caruso said it was a good outcome for the team, which had its pride dented from a loss to derby rivals Magpies last round.
“It wasn't a bad game, but the team who wanted it more came out and won in the end,” she said.
Caruso said her squad dictated the Corowa game.
“The last few games have been quite quick, as much as we can play a quick game we lose control over it,” she said.
“I don't think speed suits us.
“When we slowed down and used our centre and wing attack and fed it in (the circle).
“It was nice netball.”
Rovers captain Ash Martin controlled the game well while Ainslee Dowling locked down the defence on the wing.
Shooters Caitlin Conroy (16-23) and Samantha Kreltszheim (6-7) made a decent percentage of shots but it was Jessica Clarke who did the main damage with 28 goals and five misses.
Caruso said Rovers needed to keep up their self-belief.
“We eliminated our mistakes,” she said.
“The last couple of weeks our basic errors have been our downfall.”
Sophie Hanrahan got 31 goals for the Roos in the loss from 45 attempts.
Goal attack Georgie Schulz couldn’t get the ball to drop and missed 12 of her 20 shots.
The loss for Corowa-Rutherglen is the second time this season the Roos have relinquished a half-time lead.
Coupled with a one-goal loss in the first round, the Roos have played several games this season which could have gone the other way.
In other games on the weekend Magpies beat North Albury by a single goal 42-41.
Wangaratta goal shooter Amanda Umanski made 26 shots and teammates Kate Dean and Hannah Grady got best player nods.
Grace Senior made 25 goals for Norths.
Yarrawonga clobbered a re-building Myrtleford with a 48-goal win.
The Pigeons restricted the Saints to just 37 shot attempts while their own goal shooter Bridget Cassar made 34 from 38.
Albury’s struggles continued as they went down 28-42 against Wodonga Raiders after a poor second half.
