The German shepherd cross English mastiff is a Delta Therapy dog who visited residents with his owner, Melissa Sewell.
Now, he is at home with his front left leg in a bandage as he recovers from a compound fracture.
Miss Sewell, a full-time psychology student at La Trobe University, said Patrick always made peoples’ days.
“We adopted him from Wodonga Dog Rescue,” she said.
“Once you meet him, it’s hard to explain, he is a lovable goof.
“People are always like ‘oh my God he’s a big dog’, but he wanders up to them and they pat him, feed him and smile.
“It seems like it really makes them happy.”
The pooch will be out of action for about eight weeks, after the accident in London Street last Thursday afternoon.
Miss Sewell said she had planned to walk her two pets, Patrick and Stella when they saw another dog across the road.
They escaped out the front door, but on his way back, Patrick ran in front of a ute.
“It was just a pure accident, it happened so quickly,” she said.
“The driver was so helpful and so was the Family Vet Centre.”
Bupa Wodonga’s general manager Katrina Jane Gunnett said he would be missed.
“Patrick usually visits us at Bupa Wodonga once a week as part of our pet therapy program and brings a lot of love, affection and happiness into the home,” she said.
“He often wanders around the home to see the residents which instantly puts big smiles on their faces.
“Patrick is a gentle giant with a calm and affectionate nature. The residents love patting him and getting cuddles from him”.
Patrick returned home on Tuesday night, but there will be ongoing costs associated with follow-up X-rays, bandages and medication.
Miss Sewell's friend, Tracy Rayner, set up an online fundraiser to help get Patrick back on his feet. For more information, search ‘Patrick the therapy dog's vet bills’ at www.gofundme.com.
