VicRoads has launched a review into the speed limits along Main Street, Chiltern.
Under the proposal, the 60km/h zone between Conness Street and North Road would be reduced to 50km/h and 100km/h zone, beyond North Road, would be reduced to 80km/h for the first 1.3 kilometres.
Ned Day, 96, has been a Chiltern resident for more than 60 years and supports the move.
“The road has cars along it all the time, it's very busy on a good day,” he said. “I think most residents would say slow down.”
Another resident Tom Janetzki agreed, saying it would make the town safer.
Business owner Ellen Taylor said VicRoads should also make stop signs at the Conness Street intersection more visible.
“I think it's a good idea, we see so many trucks speeding through town,” she said.
“People often drive straight through the stop signs too – there will be an accident one day if it doesn't change.”
Indigo Councillor Roberta Horne said she would continue petitioning for safer roads in smaller towns such as Wahgunyah, Barnawartha and Rutherglen.
“We have a meeting spot at Gollings Square on Sunday between 10am and 1pm for the petition,” she said.
“It’s what we need to do - we need to do what we can now to prevent people being killed.” Feedback can be made through ner.enquiries@raods.vic.gov.au or (03) 5761 1802 by June 16.
