Spurred on by their efforts against Bentleigh Greens last Wednesday, United took an early lead thanks to a Geoffry Lino strike.
It came after the likes of Zac Walker, Lewis Greenwood and Ashley Dunn had peppered the goals in the minutes before.
It was level pegging after half time as Dandenong looked to square things up, and United were up to the task until the league heavyweights broke through from a corner in the 61st minute.
Lino narrowly missed a second goal just minutes later, which was followed by Lionel Masudi forcing an impressive save from the City keeper.
But two City goals in the space of three minutes snatch any hope United had of sharing the points.
United face Bendigo City next week.
