Gibbons, who plays for Williamstown, was awarded the Frank Johnson Medal after picking up 34 disposals in the 19-point loss at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.
“It’s great to see him perform in another big game,” football manager Chris Dixon said.
“He’s building a reputation for that after being best in last year’s grand final.
“He’s taken his game to another level on the back of a really strong pre-season.
“He could have got comfortable after last year’s grand final but Michael has gone the other way and I think there is still improvement in him.”
Gibbons, 21, is leading the VFL for disposals and inside 50s this season and sits third in clearances.
“We would like to think his weight of numbers and performances in big games are helping him (make the AFL),” he said.
