The trust’s fundraising, marketing and events manager Jane Evans said the issue would be on the agenda after Albury Council indicated it would gift $100,000 to assist with the fitting out of the cancer centre.

In announcing the donation in April, former Albury mayor Kevin Mack had called on councils in the cancer centre's catchment to also contribute.

“We haven't heard from any other councils,” Ms Evans said.

She said the board meeting would decide if councils would be formally approached through letters of request.

There will also be consideration about whether contributions would be sought in the short or long term.

Ms Evans suggested it may be beneficial to wait until a record of patient addresses is built up so that the trust can target councils based on how many of their citizens receive treatment at the centre.

“It would add weight to our appeal once we had that data,” Ms Evans said.

The cancer centre’s catchment will extend as far west as Deniliquin, east to Khancoban, north to Henty and south to Alpine centres such as Mount Beauty.

The trust fund aims to raise $2 million before the end of 2017 to help support patient services at the cancer centre.

Ms Evans said it would be the beneficiary of the Ovens and Murray football league’s charity round this weekend with events at North Albury and Wodonga Raiders matches raising funds.

Meanwhile, the Wodonga Ratepayers Association president Ian Deegan wants his city's council to follow the lead of Albury and donate to the cancer centre.

“It doesn't need to be $100,000 a year, it can be $100,000 over three years and budget it in,” he said.

“They mightn't understand this, but people in Wodonga do have cancer and the cancer centre is going to help them.

“If Albury put in $100,000 I can’t see why we can’t match it, we’re nearly equal cities, and I can’t see why Indigo Shire and Towong Shire can't put in an amount that is pro rata.

“They build a dragonfly in the middle of the road but won't look after the pound (for animals) or cancer centre.”
