Darren Bell, 50, had been drinking at Myrtleford before stating his trip on Friday.
When highway patrol police pulled him over on the Hume Freeway at Benalla at 3.55pm, he was travelling at 124km/h with a blood-alcohol content of 0.02.
Leading Senior Constable Steve Delaney told Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court Bell’s licence was disqualified for previous drink driving.
“He said straight up ‘I’m in trouble’,” he said.
Bell was facing more driving and family violence charges in Bairnsdale and had been bailed to appear at court later in the month.
Police opposed his bail application on Monday out of fear the man would agains try to flee to the Northern Territory.
Magistrate Ian Watkins refused the application and adjourned the case until next week.
