Those closest to Aaron Crowhurst have been left shocked by the 36-year-old’s death.
Mr Crowhurst’s overturned Holden Captiva was found submerged in the creek by a nearby farm worker about 8.30am on Saturday.
The crash is thought to have occurred at some stage on Friday night or early Saturday morning.
His sister Bree Morey said his death would leave a hole in the family that could never be filled.
“He was the most genuine and nice person,” she said.
“Our family will never be the same without him.
“He was my best friend.”
Mr Crowhurst was passionate about music and had spent most of his life on the Border.
Police are trying to determine how the vehicle entered the water.
The area is commonly used by hoon drivers, but The Border Mail understands tyre marks near the crash site were not left by Mr Crowhurst’s vehicle.
His sister said Mr Crowhurst was a great person to spent time with.
“He was the sort of person you’d just want to be around,” Ms Morey said.
“We did everything together.”
The farm worker who made the grim discovery early on Saturday said he had seen dozens of cars stuck in the water, but no other accidents at the site had been fatal.
The car had knocked out a sign before rolling into the creek, trapping Mr Crowhurst in shallow water.
The farm worker called police after discovering the vehicle. Police divers were brought in from Melbourne to retrieve his body.
The vehicle had to be lifted using a crane.
Mr Crowhurst had come from a big family and had lived the majority of his life in Wangaratta.
He had also lived in Melbourne.
Mr Crowhurst worked at Malibu Boats in Albury and had attended school at Galen Catholic College in Wangaratta.
Tributes have flowed for the 36-year-old on social media, with many mourning a life taken too soon.
He was a huge fan of the Foo Fighters and enjoyed alternative music.
Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash and will prepare a report for the coroner.
