Natasha and David Warlond and their two children had spent nearly a week at Dinner Plain and enjoyed the holiday so much, they decided to stay an extra night.
The trip was thrown into chaos early Friday morning when Natasha – who was 38 weeks pregnant – went into labour.
Mr Warlond said their first two children had arrived late and they expected the same to happen this time.
“Any birth is special but the circumstances were just completely unexpected,” he said.
“It was like something out of a movie the way it happened.”
The couple had been unsure what to do and initially started driving to Omeo hospital then Bairnsdale hospital in difficult weather conditions.
A snow chain attached to their car became loose and was likely to have caused serious problems if they had kept driving.
After being attended to by paramedics, Mrs Warlond was taken to the top of the mountain and gave birth in the medical centre.
Mr Warlond said the new addition to the family, Christian, was happy and healthy when delivered.
“It was a great week and an unexpected but fantastic finish to it,” he said.
A decision to turn left or right when coming down from the mountain had a major impact on how the incident played out, he said.
His wife would have given birth in the car if he had have taken a different turn.
Paramedic Craig Jenkins said it was first baby to be delivered on the mountain.
The couple plan to return with Christian to thank the paramedics and medical staff in person.
