Brew and his father, Nick, were on their way to Melbourne for the under-19 representative clash between Victoria Country and VAFA when a Holden Commodore slammed into their Volkswagen Golf at 100km/h on the Hume Highway near Craigieburn on Saturday.
A relieved Brew was thankful his sisters weren’t in the car when the accident happened about 11.30am.
“We’re really lucky to be alive, or not hurt or anything,” he said.
“It could’ve been a lot worse.
“Thankfully it was just me and dad, it’s lucky my little sisters weren’t in the back seat … they would have been in some serious strife.
“There were some roadworks up ahead so we seen them and put on the brakes to stop but the car behind us didn’t see us and ran up our backside at 100km/h.
“I saw it in my rear view and I thought to myself ‘geez, they’re coming pretty quick’ and next thing you know we’re getting slammed forward and we’re on the side of the road.
“The back of the Golf is folded up and that other car was pretty hammered as well.”
The star Hoppers midfielder is used to finding his way out of heavy traffic in the Ovens and Murray and he put the accident behind him to be voted Victoria Country’s best player by the opposition at Mernda on Sunday.
“I had to (put it behind me quickly) because I wanted to have a good game,” he said.
Brew was making his way back to the Border on Sunday night and joked he might look for a vehicle with more protection when he replaces his written-off Volkswagen Golf.
“Dad will get me a new car, she’ll be right – I might upgrade to a ute with a tray,” he laughed.
Victoria Country coach Damian Sexton paid tribute to Brew after the match, saying he played a pivotal role in the team’s 16.11 (107) to 10.3 (63) victory.
“Him and his dad are very fortunate that they weren’t badly hurt, or even worse,” he said.
“He came out and he was in our best three players.
“He goes and gets his own footy.”
Brew has been a revelation at Bunton Park after joining the Hoppers from cross-town rivals Albury this season.
