The troops in purple are in full swing, gearing up for the Border's big event at Birallee Park on October 22 and 23.

About 43 teams have already registered, amounting to 200 participants.

Miss Wilkinson, the committee marketing leader, said she had been involved with the event for several years.

“I am continually moved by the show of community support the Border community displays each year,” she said.

“Walking the track with cancer survivors and carers long into the night it’s hard not to be moved.

“I am so inspired by their continued strength and resilience on display.”

There were 158 teams at last year's event, which the committee hoped would be beaten this time around

The Border has already raised $12,000 prior to the launch on Saturday.

Big purple events will be held at Wodonga's Junction Square farmers’ markets and outside Terry White Chemist in Dean Street from 9.30am.

Dougal the bear will be wandering about for people to take photos with, while volunteers cook up a storm on the barbecues.

Miss Wilkinson encouraged people to be part of something special.

“This weekend we will be on the street reminding everyone why we relay and asking them to join us in supporting the survivors, fighters and carers on their journey,” she said.

“It’s a chance to celebrate cancer survivors, remember and honour our loved ones lost and an opportunity to play your part in the fight back against cancer.

“Being able to bring communities together from both sides of the border, united under the banner of team relay is really comforting to those out there struggling with the impact of cancer.”

Some of the $400,000 raised last year has been used by Cancer Council NSW to purchase a vehicle for the Transport to Treatment program. Patients in the region will be able to utilise the service from August.
