Victorian Transport Minister Jacinta Allan admitted on Thursday she had not been formally briefed but said rail was expensive and financing it was challenging.
“It’s an interesting idea and not the first time it’s been floated to put high-speed rail links between Melbourne and Sydney,” she said.
“We’ll have a chance to have a look at this proposal and there’s others in this space about how you can improve rail between the cities.”
A spokesman for NSW Transport refused to answer questions about the project’s viability or whether talks had taken place with the proponents.
“The NSW government is always happy to look at proposals that deliver long-term benefits for the people of NSW,” he said. “We’re committed to improving services for regional customers and are continuing to invest in the network, such as through the procurement of a new XPT fleet.”
