After debuting as a 15-year-old in 1949, Gardiner went on to play 546 senior matches including 453 for the Lions.
He also had brief stints with Rand, Jindera and Albury.
Gardiner played in five premierships and won the Baz Medal for the Farrer league’s best and fairest in 1961,1962 and 1964.
He was pursued by four VFL clubs and included on Footscray’s 1953 list before declining and returning to the country.
Gardiner was awarded the Australian Sports Medal for services to football in 2000.
Des Kennedy, Gary O’Connell, Merv Wegener, Lindsay Norman and Peter Carroll were inducted into the league’s inaugural Hall of Fame last year with several hundred people attending the function.
