The dual premiership coach announced after training on Thursday night he would be stepping aside after six seasons in charge at J.C. Lowe Oval.
Chris Kennedy, who has shared the job with Barnes for five of his six seasons, said the rugged Pigeon was focused on finishing the year strongly.
“He’s a pretty low-key guy, ‘Barnesy’, and he just wanted to let the playing group know so it wasn’t a distraction later on in the year,” he said.
Kennedy said he was yet to start serious talks with the Pigeons hierarchy about whether he would continue next year but would do “whatever is in best interests of the club”.
The third-placed Pigeons host North Albury at J.C. Lowe Oval on Saturday.
